NTIAC Offers X-Ray Computed Tomography Service
The Nondestructive Testing Information Analysis Center is proud to announce a
new service to Department of Defense related projects: X-Ray Computed
Tomography inspections. The 420 kV system is able to handle a variety of
sample dimensions from a fraction of an inch up to about 20" tall and 11" in
diameter. The resolution of the scan depends on the sample's dimensions and
geometry.
The new low-cost inspection service is geared to support military inspections
for prototypes, "one-offs," and limited production runs. A CD of the acquired
images are provided with each inspection, which can be viewed in 3D on the CD
itself or imported into most image processing packages such as ImageJ, NIH
Image, The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), or Adobe Photoshop. In a
recent project, NTIAC was able to provide a 100% three dimensional
reconstruction of a 9" tall, 8" diameter assembly containing plastic, ceramic,
and metal components for less than $1000. If larger scale inspections are
needed, NTIAC can provide referrals to other CT laboratories.
X-Ray Computed Tomography (CT) uses a precise positioning system and takes a
series of X-Ray scans of a part, each from a different angle around the part.
The result is a complete three-dimensional picture of the part that can be
used to observe features, e.g. flaws or exact location of components of
interest, inside the sample without destructive analysis.
