Following is a conference  announcement  that didn't quite make our Newsletter
that went out this morning.  Abstracts are due July 31, 2002.

SPIE 10th Annual International Symposium on Smart Structures and Materials
SPIE 8th Annual International Symposium on NDE for Health Monitoring and
Diagnostics

This year the symposia will focus on "Innovating  Smart Structures,  Materials
and Systems: Conceptualization and Synthesis" and "The Diagnostic and Homeland
Security of NDE, and methods  that  augment or assist  human  intelligence  in
building  and  maintaining  systems  for the  future."  Unique  in  2003,  the
conference  on "Smart Civil  Structures"  is  cosponsored  by both symposia to
foster more interdisciplinary  cooperation and to focus on the intersection of
these related technologies in the civil infrastructure.

Abstracts  of  approximately  250  words  are due  July 31, 2002;  manuscripts
February 3, 2003.  Further  information on the symposia, including this year's
conferences and the online abstract  submission  procedure, are available from
