Among other things this would allow nondestructive determination of the type of tree without harvesting-the curly birch variant can be allowed to grow and the less valuable silver birch can be harvested immediately. The paper* by the Electronics Research Unit of the University of Helsinki's Department Of Physical Sciences has been approved for publication in the Journal Of Applied Physics; until it's published you can get more information about their NDE work from their website at http://electronics.physics.helsinki.fi/research/ultrasonics/research_ultrasonics.html (scroll down to "Ultrasonic testing of industrial grade wood" for more on their work with wood). Details follow. * Interested in shearography testing only. * Number of tires to inspect: around six. Tires are conventional passenger vehicle tires. * Time frame for inspection: within a week or two. * The inquirer is local to the Houston area so would prefer nearby facilities but anything within the continental U.S. would be considered. * Looking to ship the tires out for inspection, but I think could probably accommodate on-site inspections as well. If you might be interested in participating in the investigation, please feel free to drop me a line. Time is rather short for the inquirer so I'd like to try to get the compiled list of interested service providers within the next day or two.
